The Real “Secret” To Success

The Real “Secret” To Success

“If we study what is merely average, we will remain merely average.”Shawn Achor

About 20 years ago, I was the COO at a small international consulting company. At the time, I was single and living large with more money than I deserved.

I had all of the “things” that successful people have; the home, the car, the ability to travel and enjoy life.

Unfortunately, my life lacked meaning and purpose.

Even though I appeared to be “successful” I wasn’t happy.

Fortunately, my world changed overnight and I learned some things about myself and how success really works that made a difference in my life.

They will make a difference in your life too.

What You Have Been Taught About Happiness and Success

If you observe the people around you, you’ll find most individuals follow a formula that has been subtly or not so subtly taught to them their whole life.

I bet that you have been taught the same thing.

That is:

If you work hard, you will become successful, and once you become successful, then you’ll be happy.

The formula looks like this:

Hard work→Success → Happiness

This formula is what most often motivates you in life.

You think:

If I can have the career I’ve always wanted, I’ll be happy.

If I can have enough money to buy the things I’ve have always wanted, I’ll be happy.

If I can have the ability to travel the world in my free time, I’ll be happy.

And so on.

It’s always success first, happiness second.

But, if that’s true — shouldn’t the most successful people in the world be the happiest?

You Have Been Taught A Lie

The fact is that most people aren’t happy.

Americans live in one of the richest countries in the world, but according to the 2017 Harris Poll Survey of American Happiness, only 33% of Americans surveyed said they were happy.

So, why aren’t they happy?

Maybe a better question is…

If you have the career you have always wanted.

If you have the money to buy the things you have always wanted.

If you have the ability to travel the world in your free time.

Why aren’t you happy?

If success causes happiness, then everyone who had the career they have always wanted, everyone who has the money to buy the things they have always wanted, and everyone who has the ability to travel the world in their free time should be happy.

So why aren’t they happy?

Because with each victory, our goalposts of success keep getting pushed further and further out, so that happiness gets pushed over the horizon.

Your formula for success will never work because it is backward.

You have been taught a lie!

The Truth About Happiness And Success

“More than a decade of groundbreaking research in the fields of psychology and neuroscience have proven the relationship between success and happiness works the other way around.” — Shawn Achor

The real formula for success looks like this:

Happiness→ Success → Hard work

Happiness is the precursor to success and not the result.

Your happiness actually fuels your success.

It’s true, psychology researchers have conducted over 200 studies on 275,000 people worldwide. They found that happiness leads to success in nearly every domain, including work, health, friendship, sociability, creativity, and energy.

It turns out that your brain is literally hardwired to perform at it’s best not when it’s negative or even neutral, but when it’s positive and happy.

You will become more successful when you become happier and more positive.

In Conclusion

For years I believed that if I took life seriously and worked hard, I would become successful.

Once I became successful, I would be happy.

So, I worked hard in building a successful business hoping that success would bring happiness.

It didn’t.

The problem was that I believed the lie that I had been taught,

Hard work→Success → Happiness

I was following a formula for success that was broken.

My life changed once I learned the real formula for success.

Happiness→ Success → Hard work

When I focused on doing the things that made me happy, I became more successful.

Most of us go through life believing that when we graduate from college, find our dream job, or get that big promotion we will be happy.

Unfortunately, we miss out on life while we are chasing success.

That’s why it’s so important to learn how to be happy today.

Taking your life too seriously rarely breeds the kind of happiness and success you want out of it.

If you can’t find the time to do the things that truly make you happy today, you will regret it later.

It doesn’t matter where you are in your life — take some time today to step back, and do something that will make you happy.

You won’t regret it.
